Area: 11,000 s.f.
Site & Program: The new Campus Ministries Building will further Valparaiso University’s strategic plan by bringing students, alumni and clergy together to deepen the Lutheran identification of the institution. One of the principles guiding the design of the facility is a “church in the world” emphasis.
The new building consists of reception, multipurpose, music rehearsal, devotional, meeting and administrative offices for a variety of student-centered and pastoral activities. A curving canopy shades the south facade and covers a walk that connects the existing bell tower and chancel and supports the chruch in the world concept.
Design: The primary design challenge is creating an appropriate relationship between the Campus Ministries Building and the historic Chapel of the Resurrection. The new one-story building is designed as a foreground building to the Chapel. Its simple geometry and natural building materials fit nicely into the existing landscape and assure the continued predominance of the Chapel.
