Area: 25,000 square feet

Site and Program: CCS is an independent JK-8 school located in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago. Nagle Hartray provided master planning and concept design services which proceeded into design of a three-story classroom building with a lower level learning commons in Phase 1. Future phases include full renovation of classroom facilities in an existing loft building and a new entry hall at Schiller Street.

Design: The architecture of the new building emulates the scale, vertical stone detailing, and window rhythm of the loft building. The curved form of the enclosed roof top playground reflects the playfulness of the early childhood users for whom the space is dedicated. The horizontal arrangement of spaces connects the two classroom buildings by grade levels, keeping early childhood education on the first floor, lower school on the second floor, and middle school on the 3rd floor. Shared services, including learning commons, art, music, and dining, are located on the lower level.
