Area: Renovation – 38,600 square feet
Expansion – 15,100 square feet
Site & Program: Ridgeland Common is the Park District of Oak Park's flagship facility. What began as an outdoor ice rink has evolved over a century to an indoor rink, outdoor pool, and playfield facility that accommodates a wide range of Park District programs year round.
Design: The substantial renovation and expansion of Ridgeland Common lengthens the ice sheet to regulation size, adds team and coaches locker rooms, expands skating support facilities, adds program rooms, and replaces existing mechanical, ice, and aquatics infrastructure with new state-of-the-art systems.
Ridgeland Common was renovated into a single story facility that assures universal accessibility.
It also substantially improves site features. Existing play fields have been replaced with synthetic turf over a storm water drainage system, field lighting has been replaced, a new dog park was constructed, and a new youth pool feature was added. A new drop-off lane improves traffic flow and increases safety.
The design preserves Ridgeland Common's most distinguishing feature – its exposed wood structure over the ice rink. The architecture of the expanded areas complements this dominant feature.
